Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the few countries where the regulator publishes coverage in two columns: how many people are reached, and how much of the country is. In the quarter to June 2026, TCRA reports 4G population coverage of 94.39% and geographic coverage of 77.53%. For 5G it is 34.18% of the population and 11.34% of the land area — a clear jump from March 2026, when those two stood at 32.83% and 11.04%. 2G reaches 98.66% of people and 79.86% of the land, 3G 93.95% and 76.41%. TCRA notes that its statistics follow the standards of the International Telecommunication Union.

Underneath those figures sits a very large market: nearly 117 million subscriptions at a penetration of 167.0%, 62.8 million internet subscriptions and 31.3 million smartphones. Five operators share it — Vodacom 33.0%, Yas 28.6%, Airtel 20.5%, Halotel 16.4% and TTCL 1.5%. The network behind those numbers consisted in June 2026 of 15,697 4G base stations and 1,958 5G base stations, with the 5G rollout growing 8.5% over the quarter. Vodacom deployed Tanzania's first 5G network in September 2022, starting in Dar es Salaam.

Roaming in Tanzania without an eSIM

Tanzania is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine, and Tanzania is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore stays behind: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps that apply inside the zone. On a two-week itinerary that is not a detail, and it lands on exactly the days you need data most: maps, bookings, staying in touch with your guide or your lodge. The European Commission advises checking that tariff with your provider before you go.

People versus square kilometres: what Tanzania's figures mean for your trip

Put TCRA's two numbers side by side and you have the most honest summary of mobile internet in Tanzania there is: 4G reaches 94.39% of the population, but 77.53% of the land area. There is no contradiction between them — they measure different things. People live clustered together, and networks are built where the people are. More than a fifth of the country therefore sits outside 4G coverage, and for 5G that share is far larger still: 11.34% of the land is covered.

For anyone staying in Dar es Salaam, Dodoma or Arusha, that is a footnote. For anyone heading inland, it is the point: a route that leaves the populated corridors runs, by definition, through the part of the map where those two numbers diverge. TCRA does not publish which areas those are — the geographic figure is national and not broken down — so we name no parks, reserves or routes. The practical conclusion does not depend on those names: make sure your data is already working before you leave the populated part, download your maps and bookings offline, and do not count on sorting anything out along the way.

Frequently asked questions

How good are 4G and 5G in Tanzania?+

The regulator TCRA publishes it as two numbers, and the gap between them is the whole story: in the quarter to June 2026, 4G reached 94.39% of the population but 77.53% of the land area. For 5G it is 34.18% of people and 11.34% of the land. 2G and 3G reach 98.66% and 93.95% of the population respectively. Almost everyone is covered; nowhere near everywhere is.

Which mobile networks operate in Tanzania?+

Tanzania has five: Vodacom, Yas, Airtel, Halotel and TTCL. Their market shares in the quarter to June 2026 were Vodacom 33.0%, Yas 28.6%, Airtel 20.5%, Halotel 16.4% and TTCL 1.5%, for nearly 117 million subscriptions between them. The Ariya eSIM connects to a local network — there is no operator for you to choose.

Will I have signal outside Tanzania's cities?+

Often yes, but not everywhere — and the regulator says so in figures. 4G covers 94.39% of people but 77.53% of the land, so more than a fifth of the country falls outside 4G coverage. TCRA does not break down which areas those are, so we name no parks or routes. Make sure your data is working before you leave the populated corridors, and download your route and bookings offline.

Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Tanzania?+

No. Tanzania sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you. Your operator bills Tanzanian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Ask what that costs before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.

Does my phone support eSIM?+

Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.

When should I activate my Tanzania eSIM?+

Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Tanzania, so your plan starts at the right time.

How do I receive my eSIM?+

Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.

Can I top up my plan?+

Yes, simply buy a new Tanzania eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
