Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Thailand
Thailand has three mobile operators: AIS, True Corporation and NT (National Telecom), which is state-owned. They have not always been three: in October 2022 the telecoms regulator NBTC approved the merger of True and dtac, cutting the number of large players from three to two. Before that merger, AIS stood at roughly 44% of the market, True at 34% and dtac at 21%.
5G has been around longer here than many travellers assume. Thailand auctioned its 5G spectrum in February 2020, selling 48 licences — one of the earliest 5G auctions in Southeast Asia. By 2022, True Corporation held spectrum across 700, 850 and 900 MHz as well as 1.8, 2.1, 2.6 and 26 GHz, covering both reach and capacity. We deliberately quote no 5G coverage percentage: the number in circulation is a 2022 forecast, not a measurement. Count on 4G as the workhorse and 5G where density is high.
Roaming in Thailand without an eSIM
Thailand falls outside the European roaming rules. 'Roam Like at Home' applies to the 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine, and Thailand is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch plan therefore does not behave as it does at home: your operator bills Thai data at its own out-of-bundle rate, and the European price caps that apply inside the zone do not reach here. The European Commission says it in as many words: roaming outside the EU and EEA can be expensive, and you are better off asking your own provider beforehand. Over three weeks of travelling, with maps, bookings and photos, that adds up differently than over a weekend.
Local SIM cards and registration in Thailand
Thailand is not a country where you end up with no connection: AIS sells a dedicated SIM for Tourist, and SIM cards are widely available at airports and in shopping centres. The difference is in the steps around it. SIM registration is a requirement set by the regulator, the NBTC — AIS has a help article of its own on it — but what a foreign visitor must present, and whether any limit applies, is not published by the NBTC anywhere we could check. An eSIM is bought and installed before you leave: you step off the plane in Bangkok or Phuket already online, with no counter and no queue.
Frequently asked questions
Is there 5G in Thailand?+
Yes, 5G is commercially available. Thailand auctioned its 5G spectrum as early as February 2020, selling 48 licences in one of the earliest 5G auctions in Southeast Asia. We do not quote a coverage percentage: the figure that circulates is a 2022 forecast rather than a measurement. Assume 4G will carry most of your trip.
Which mobile networks does Thailand have?+
Three: AIS, True Corporation and NT (National Telecom, state-owned). True Corporation is the merged True and dtac business; regulator NBTC approved that merger in October 2022, taking the market from three large operators to two. Before the merger, AIS held roughly 44% of the market, True 34% and dtac 21%.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Thailand?+
Not at your domestic rate. Thailand lies outside 'Roam Like at Home', which applies only to the 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine. Your operator bills Thai data at its own out-of-bundle rate, with no European price caps. The European Commission advises asking your provider what that rate is before you travel.
Do I have to register a Thai SIM card?+
For a local SIM, yes: registration is a requirement of the regulator, the NBTC, and AIS explains in its own help pages how to register a SIM in line with those rules. What a foreign visitor has to present for it is not published by the NBTC on any page we could reach — ask the seller. An eSIM is arranged before departure, without that step.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Thailand eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Thailand, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Thailand eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
