Mobile internet, 4G and the 2019 5G question in Trinidad and Tobago
Trinidad and Tobago has two current mobile operators, both confirmed through their own sites: Digicel and bmobile, the consumer brand of TSTT (Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago). A third name, LaqTel, appears in older reporting tied to a 2005 network-build contract, but no current source names it as a live consumer mobile brand, so we only count the two. Both operators were reported to have announced 5G in December 2019 — bmobile on 5 December and Digicel's own CEO weighing in on 12 December that year. Five years on, though, bmobile's own most recent network marketing, a February 2025 press release, talks entirely about expanding its 4G LTE network, optimising spectrum efficiency and a new VoLTE (Voice over LTE) rollout — 5G is not mentioned anywhere in it. The honest read: treat the 2019 announcements as unconfirmed for everyday coverage, and plan for 4G.
Roaming in Trinidad and Tobago without an eSIM
Trinidad and Tobago is outside the EU's 'Roam Like at Home' area, which covers only the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and separately Moldova and Ukraine. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle does not travel with you: your home operator bills local data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the European price caps that apply inside that zone. The European Commission's own advice is to check that tariff with your provider before you fly.
Buying a local SIM in Trinidad and Tobago: Digicel's ID requirement
Trinidad and Tobago's telecoms regulator, TATT, could not be reached for this research, so nothing below comes from the regulator directly — only from the operators' own sites. Digicel Trinidad and Tobago's own prepaid page states: 'A Valid Government Issued ID - So we know it's you!' — the same wording Digicel uses in Guyana, suggesting this is a Digicel Group policy rather than a one-off local rule. No specific document list (passport, national ID, driving licence) is given. bmobile's own site confirms an 'eSIM Advisory' exists, but its content was not accessible to confirm whether the same requirement applies there.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks are there in Trinidad and Tobago?+
Two, confirmed through their own current sites: Digicel and bmobile, the consumer brand of TSTT. A third name, LaqTel, appears only in older reporting and is not confirmed as a current consumer brand.
Is there 5G in Trinidad and Tobago?+
Treat it as unconfirmed. Both operators were reported to have announced 5G in December 2019, but bmobile's own most recent network marketing, from February 2025, discusses only 4G LTE investment and VoLTE, with no mention of 5G. Plan for 4G.
Do I need ID for a local SIM in Trinidad and Tobago?+
With Digicel, yes. Its own prepaid page states that a valid government-issued ID is required, without listing which documents qualify. bmobile's own equivalent requirement could not be confirmed.
Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle work in Trinidad and Tobago?+
No. Trinidad and Tobago is outside the EU roaming zone, so the European price caps do not apply, and your operator bills local data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff. Check that rate with your provider before you travel.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Trinidad and Tobago eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Trinidad and Tobago, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Trinidad and Tobago eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
