Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Vietnam
Commercial 5G reached Vietnam in October 2024, switched on by Viettel. Viettel is the country's leading operator and the only one running 5G nationwide, in both standalone and non-standalone form; in December 2025 it reported thirty thousand 5G base stations and said they cover 90% of outdoor and 70% of indoor areas, with 99% population coverage targeted by 2030 and a recently acquired 700 MHz licence to carry it. Those remain the operator's figures for the operator's own network. Plan for 5G in the big cities and 4G beyond them.
Roaming in Vietnam without an eSIM
Vietnam is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine, and Vietnam is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle does not make the trip: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, and the EU price caps that hold inside the zone do nothing here. The European Commission's own advice is to check the cost with your provider before you travel.
Vietnam switches 3G off in September 2028
Vietnam's Ministry of Information and Communications has announced that 3G services will be shut down in September 2028. No official end date has been published for 2G, so we will not name one. For anyone travelling now the meaning is simple: the country is moving its subscribers and its network capacity onto 4G and 5G, which are precisely the technologies an eSIM runs on. An older handset that only speaks 3G is no longer a good travel phone in Vietnam — check before you go that yours supports 4G and takes an eSIM.
Frequently asked questions
Which networks does the eSIM use in Vietnam?+
Viettel is Vietnam's leading operator and the only one running 5G nationwide, in both standalone and non-standalone form; other state-owned operators are active too. The eSIM connects to local networks for 4G/5G internet.
Is there 5G in Vietnam?+
Yes, since October 2024, when Viettel switched it on commercially. In December 2025 Viettel reported thirty thousand 5G base stations and says they reach 90% of outdoor and 70% of indoor areas. Those are the operator's own figures for its own network, not a regulator's measurement: in practice, count on 5G in the big cities and 4G as your steady connection elsewhere.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Vietnam?+
No. Vietnam sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you. Your operator bills Vietnamese data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Ask what that costs before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.
Is it true that 3G is going away in Vietnam?+
Yes. Vietnam's Ministry of Information and Communications has announced that 3G will be shut down in September 2028. For a trip today what that mostly means is that the networks are pushing everything onto 4G and 5G — exactly the technologies your eSIM runs on.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Vietnam eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Vietnam, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Vietnam eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
